Ferrari Wants to Invent a New Vehicle Segment With its Crossover

"It will probably happen but it will happen in Ferrari's style", Chief Executive Officer Sergio Marchionne said during a conference call to report quarterly earnings.

Three years have passed since then, and Marchionne is now open to the idea of complementing Ferrari's supercar lineup with an SUV or two, including a four-seat "utility vehicle", according to sources familiar with the situation who spoke to Bloomberg.

Of course, there is no way to confirm the rumour now but what do you think of Ferrari jumping on the SUV train as well?

It seems this will all become official when Ferrari reveals its five year plan early next year, and that it will see Ferrari pushing past its self-imposed production of 10,000 cars a year.

Sources cited by the Bloomberg news agency have suggested that the "Ferrari Utility Vehicle" could form part of a new five-year-plan created to boost sales beyond Ferrari's current self-imposed limit of 10,000 cars per year.

Years ago, it would have been laughable to even suggest a Ferrari SUV.

Among projects being evaluated is a four-seat family vehicle that offers more space than Ferrari's current two-door GTC4Lusso.

"That space is too big and too inviting and we have a lot of our customers who will be more than willing to drive a Ferrari-branded vehicle that has that kind of utilitarian objective".

Details of the five-year plan are set to be revealed next year as Marchionne sums up his final goals before an aimed retirement in 2021. Marchionne also noted that Ferrari's decision will not be made with intent to compete with Porsche. Pushing beyond the 10,000 auto limit would mean it would lost its "small vehicle manufacturer" status, which protects it from some US and European fuel-use and emissions rules.

To address those issues, the Italian carmaker, which was spun off from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV in 2016, plans to introduce more hybrid vehicles starting in 2019 to help comply with stricter environmental regulations, the people said.

Meanwhile, boosting output could prompt Ferrari to add a second shift to its factory in Maranello, Italy, its only manufacturing site, the people said.
